During the “Live the Life You Want Women’s International Retreat” in Ojai this past weekend, I found a common denominator when it came to eating habits; stress. Whether it’s stress eating, poor sleep due to stress or even a loss of appetite, stress is a major contributor to successful weight loss and an overall healthy diet. Many of us use food to deal with emotional challenges we don’t want to face. Not only that, but a study published in the Journal of Biological Psychiatryrecently found that women who reported they were stressed, burned about 100 fewer calories per day.1 All these stress problems are really beginning to add up; and explaining why one may not be losing weight.
So, how do you deal with stress for a successful weight loss?
Unfortunately, stress is one of those things that we all experience every now and again. The trick is learning to have a healthy response to it. Just because you didn’t get that promotion or didn’t lose those 2lbs doesn’t mean you’re a failure. Additionally, eating a pint of ice cream isn’t going to get you that promotion, and most certainly not going to help you lose those 2lbs; but junk food has a hold on us. A study conducted this year and published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, found that eating foods high in sugar inhibits stress-induced cortisol responses; meaning sugar makes you feel better. This is the way we’ve learned to respond to stress and so now, our body relies on that pint of ice cream to make us happy; it’s what we know.
The path to breaking the cycle can be hard but it can be done! Here are a few ways you can stop stress eating:
If all else fails, grab some D-Stress™ containing nutrients that support a healthy stress response cycle. If you’re experiencing stress at work or at home, make sure you have the right nutrients to help you respond to stress that could result in stress eating.
Remember, the key to living a healthy, happy life is nutrition.
