Resveratrol Benefits- Resveratrol and Anti Aging

"French Paradox" *

Resveratrol red wine.  In 1992, the suggested health benefits of red wine led to the coining of the phrase “The French Paradox.”   This was used to describe the low incidence of obesity and heart disease French citizens; despite their relatively high-fat diet and wine consumption.

The focus of the “French Paradox” research shifted more specifically to resveratrol, a compound found in the skin of grapes – this was the link to red wine. Over the years, research widely recognizes that resveratrol may have a multitude of health benefits including anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular benefits, anti-diabetes potential, and neurological benefits. But the most recent ground-breaking data, presented at the resveratrol 2012 Conference in Leicester, England, suggests that a daily dose of resveratrol, equivalent to two glasses of red wine, can reduce the chances of bowel tumours by 50%.

Clinical trials are currently taking place to determine the best dose of resveratrol and the various health benefits associated with it. But in the meantime, this news reinforces our belief that certain nutrients, such as resveratrol, play a significant role in supporting the body in its fight against degenerative diseases often associated with the aging process.

Antioxidants benefits.  A recent study in the Journal of Physiology has further concluded that the amazing and powerful antioxidant Resveratrol improves exercise performance, heart function, and muscle strength. And if that wasn’t enough, the study also showed significant benefits in energy metabolism. What does all this mean? It means Resveratrol is a nutrient that has far reaching benefits in health and wellness and should be taken daily for those seeking great health.

The nutrient, so closely linked to the consumption of red wine and grapes, has been on the tip of most nutraceutical researchers since a team from Harvard in 2003 found that it increased the life of yeast cells. From there, researchers began to find that Resveratrol was able to actually penetrate the cell and further strengthen the areas that lead to energy production (metabolism) and provide protective benefits against damaging free radicals.

This new research is groundbreaking because one of the issues with increased activities and exercise is the further damage of cells and tissues caused by the increase production of toxic metabolites. Those individuals that are sensitive to these toxins, specifically those who are undergoing dramatic weight loss or have other health-related issues, could be susceptible to further breakdown. However, with daily intake of Resveratrol, using high-quality ingredients, research has shown that it can be incredibly protective in areas from the heart to the head!

Resveratrol- Turning on the "Longevity Gene" **

In the 2013 online edition of the journal “Nature,” Harvard Medical School researchers announced that resveratrol appears to duplicate the life-extending properties of caloric restriction in yeast.  The report stated that resveratrol could extend the lifespan of yeast by up to 80 percent.

Caloric restriction has been known for decades to significantly extend the lifespan of lab animals.  Severe caloric restriction (not recommended) in studies on laboratory mice has shown to increase lifespan up to the human equivalent of 162 years.  It also has been shown to protect them from age-related diseases and cancer.

Scientists recently identified a class or regulatory “longevity genes” that almost all living organism share.  During time of extreme stress, such as during famine or drought, these genes function to enhance survival.  Under certain environmental deterioration conditions, these longevity genes “switch on” and create defensive changes at the cellular level.  This could be slowing the metabolism and enhancing cellular respiration to help the body to adapt to better survival program.

The Harvard study focused on sirtuin proteins, which are produced by almost every life form during times of stress or caloric restriction.

“We think sirtuins buy cells time to repair damage,” said molecular biologist David Sinclair, assistant professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School and co-author of the new study. “There is a growing realization from the aging field that blocking cell death – as long as it doesn’t lead to cancer – extends lifespan.”

The Harvard team looked for other ways to modulate sirtuin activity without starvation.  They found several plants that acted as sirtuin-activating compounds.  They found the most potent activator was resveratrol.

Studies seem to suggest resveratrol helps activate cellular longevity.  Additional studies indicate that resveratrol also can block all three mechanism of cancer.  Resveratrol does this by helping the body inhibit tumor initiation, promotion and progression.  Also, reservatrol has been shown in many studies  to reducing platelet aggregation and increase HDL-cholesterol and therefore benefit in heart disease. In combination with other bioflavonoids and vitamins E and C, resveratrol may have a synergistic effect to stimulate healthy blood flow.

Resveratrol weight loss.  Their conclusion was that the data seems to suggest that resveratrol activates sirtuins to mimic the benefits of caloric restriction to slow aging and extend lifespan.

Resveratrol can be found in Cell Shield RTQ™ (Item #21203). Cell Shield RTQ™ delivers a highly bioavailable, proprietary blend of three powerful antioxidants (Resveratrol: 200mg, Turmeric: 300mg, and Quercetin: 400mg) for potent protection against cell-damaging free radicals.*

Resveratrol Supplementation Could Lead to Improved Memory Function! Resveratrol Results***

For many years, Resveratrol has been praised and the topic of many nutritional headlines for its high antioxidants properties. It’s been suggested that Resveratrol could help protect the body against aging and many diseases; including heart disease, diabetes, and even obesity. While most of the studies conducted on the health benefits associated with the consumption of Resveratrol have mostly been conducted on test tubes and mice, a new research conducted using men and women has found that Resveratrol supplements have the potential to improve memory function in older individuals.

A recent study published in the Journal of Neuroscience stated that daily supplements containing Resveratrol may boost memory performance in association with improved glucose metabolism in older adults and increased functional connectivity of the hippocampus.1 There has already been other research conducted on the potential brain health benefits (such as boosting blood flow to the brain) associated with consuming Resveratrol, however, most of these studies didn’t dive into how it affected the actual cognitive performance of the brain; until now.

This new study randomly assigned 46 men and women, from the age of 50 to 75, to either receive a 200 mg daily dose of Resveratrol or a placebo. After 26 weeks, the participants were asked to take a series of memory tests and neuroimaging – techniques that image the structure and function of the brain. The results were compelling, showing significant improvement in word retention compared to the placebo group, decreased levels of hemoglobin – an indicator of excessive glucose in the blood – and a substantial increase in hippocampal functional connectivity – the hippocampus in the brain helps with memory forming, organizing and storing. These results gave scientists much to consider on the potential of Resveratrol supplementation; with more studies to be conducted soon.

Although for years, Resveratrol has been highlighted for its cardiovascular health benefits and anti-aging compounds, even thought to be responsible for the French paradox, the true potential of Resveratrol seems yet to be discovered. There is still so much more to learn about this powerful antioxidant and boosting one’s memory wouldn’t be a bad side effect.
