The Never-Ending Benefits of Green Tea
It’s about that time of the year when we all start to bring out our coats, add extra blankets to our bedding, and prepare for cozy evenings around the fire place; we’ll do anything to stay warm and healthy. And what better way is there to stay warm and healthy during this time of year than to enjoy a nice cup of warm and delicious herbal tea such as earl grey, chamomile, or green tea.
Drinking herbal teas provide us with an array of benefits from, soothing sore throats to alleviating stress, but green tea in particular has proven to be a token in the herbal tea realm due to its high antioxidant benefit content and anti-aging properties. And the great thing about green tea is that you don’t need to consume it in a hot beverage; it’s easily found as an extract and consumed through supplements.
Although I’ve always been well aware of the health benefits of green tea, the most popular being its potential to fight cancer, heart disease, and help with weight loss, I came across something that caught my eye recently. A new study was conducted by The Department of Food Science at Pennsylvania State University on the effects that the green tea extract has on reducing the incidences of type-2 diabetes on mice. While, there have been studies done before on the use of green tea to slow or prevent type-1 diabetes, what Penn State researchers found was that the effects of the green tea extract may be linked to its ability to inhibit the action of the enzyme responsible for starch digestion, thus reducing the risk of type-2 diabetes. Furthermore, the results of the study showed a 50% decrease in peak blood sugar levels when the mice were provided with corn starch, making a very compelling case for human subjects1.
Although the study conducted at Penn State was very premature and only tested on mice, it brings to light the great advances being made in prevention of health problems such as diabetes through natural measures. Type-2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and affects millions of Americans. The month of November is dedicated to Diabetes Awareness and we can all do our part in spreading the word on diabetes prevention. One way to keep yourself and your family healthy is with Ultimate OPC –T, which contains Green Tea and Grape Seed extracts to boost the immune system and ward off illness.
Remember, the key is prevention!
What’s not to like about green tea?
Valued for centuries throughout Asia, formal scientific research on the health benefits of green tea (Camellia sinensis) only began a decade ago. In that relatively short time researchers have discovered a treasure-trove of health benefits from green tea, including powerful support for immune and cardiovascular health, healthy blood sugar levels, balanced cholesterol, and cognition.*
Memory and Cognition
Now, a new study published in the Journal of Medicinal Foods suggests that daily supplements of a proprietary green tea extract/l-theanine combination may support mental alertness and memory.†
In the 16-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 91 participants with mild cognitive issues were recruited to receive either 1680 mg of the green tea extra/l-theanine combination or a placebo. After being given a number of tests to assess memory and attention, the participants receiving the green tea supplement displayed "marginal" changes in the delay in recognition and "significant" changes in recall of word reading.
Additionally, electroencephalograms (EEGs) recorded in 24 participants showed changes in mental alertness in specific parts of the brain.
According to the researchers, "As a natural ingredient with a long history of consumption, ….a combination of green tea extract and l-theanine should be considered as a potential nutraceutical aid for enhancing cognitive performance."
What Makes Green Tea Special
Beyond being a delicious drink, green tea has a high concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols – about 10 times the amount found in most fruits and vegetables by many estimates. The primary polyphenol from fresh green tea leaves is epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG.
Green tea also contains the amino acid L-theanine, thought to aid in stress management and promote relaxation and restful sleep.
