Do Antioxidants Really Work?  What do Antioxidants do?  What are Antioxidant Benefits?

Antioxidants Benefits Basics and Our Quest for Anti-aging

Antioxidants are now one of the most popular forms of dietary supplements. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 1999-2000) results show that more than a third of respondents reported taking dietary supplements that contained at least one of the following antioxidants: vitamin E, vitamin C, selenium, beta-carotene, flavonoids or isoflavones. We know diets that emphasize antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables are associated with good health. What exactly are antioxidants, and how do they support our health and well-being?

Free Radicals

Antioxidants are very special because they have been show to help neutralize the effects of molecules called "free radicals".  It is now widely believed that too much exposure to free radicals leads to oxidative stress, which is a factor in many common health conditions.  Free radicals are known as highly unstable molecules that contribute to cellular aging. Your body produces free radicals following exposure to pollutants such as tobacco, radiation, and smog.  They are also the by-products of various normal bodily processes, such as burning sugar for energy and metabolic detoxification.  This makes them excellent anti-aging supplements.

Antioxidants Benefits Research- Why are Antioxidants Good?

Observational studies (which track a group of people over time without changing their habits or providing any special treatments) indicate that diets rich in antioxidant-laden fruits and vegetables are associated with lower risk of certain health conditions.  In laboratory tests, antioxidants have been shown to counter oxidative stress. Antioxidants sort of "gobble up" free radicals and clear them out.

Sources of Antioxidants- What are the Top Antioxidant Foods?  What are the Top Antioxidant Fruits?

Antioxidants are certainly abundant in fruits and vegetables as well as cereals, teas, legumes, and nuts. The following is a list of antioxidants and antioxidant-rich foods include (list not all inclusive):Anthocyanins (found in blueberries and maqui berries)Beta-carotene (carrots, peppers, yams)Catechins (green tea)Flavonoids (chocolate, soy)Lipoic acid (spinach, broccoli, yams)Lutein (dark green, leafy vegetables)Lycopene (tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon, guava)Selenium (brazil nuts)Polyphenols (berries, yellow onions, green tea)Vitamin C (citrus fruits, broccoli, strawberris, tomatoes)Vitamin E (vegetable oils like wheat germ, sunflower, safflower oils), antioxidants are also found in chocolate.

USDA scientists have a scale they developed for measuring an antioxidant supplement's (or food) ability to neutralize free radicals.  This is called an ORAC score which stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity.  The higher an ORAC score is, the more powerful that supplement is in combating age-related disease and degeneration.  Watch for this ORAC score throughout this website as we talk about various supplements and anti aging products.

Doctor's Word

On the Dr. Oz website they have an article about antioxidants benefits.  It says that antioxidants not only play a crucial role in health and help fight disease but they can help turn back the clock, too!  He says they fight wrinkles, disease and even cancer.

Dr.Mercola (www.drmercola.com) explains on his website that antioxidants are crucial to health because it is believed that they actually help "control how fast you age by combating free radicals, which are at the heart of age related deterioration."

You can read more about Dr.Mercola's analysis of anti-aging antioxidant's on HIS WEBSITE.

Jeffrey Blumber, PhD; Proffesor of Nutrition at Tufts University in Boston says on WebMD.com:

"We can't rely on a few blockbuster foods to do the job," says Blumberg. "You can't eat nine servings of broccoli a day and expect it to do it all. We need to eat many different foods. Each type works in different tissues of the body, in different parts of cells. Some are good at quenching some free radicals, some are better at quenching others. When you have appropriate amounts of different antioxidants, you're doing what you can to protect yourself."

WebMD goes on to explain that the body needs a mix of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins A, C, E, and beta-carotene, to neutralize this free radical assault.
